How to test API?

Testing an API involves sending specific requests to its endpoints and verifying that the responses meet functional, security, and performance requirements.

1. Preparatory Steps

  • Understand API Documentation: Review the OpenAPI/Swagger or RAML documentation to identify available endpoints, required parameters, supported HTTP methods (GET, POST, etc.), and expected response formats.
  • Set Up Environment: Use a dedicated testing environment with mock data to avoid affecting production.
  • Identify Test Cases: Create a mix of positive tests (valid inputs), negative tests (invalid inputs/error handling), and edge cases (boundary values).
